Ambro Controls has been innovating how HVAC technicians braze, purge, charge and seal HVAC systems. With the launch of the viral Oxyset Mobile Brazing System, HVAC technicians and tradespeople could weld and braze with an ultra-portable and lightweight kit.

Over the last few months, Ambro Controls announced the launch of their Precision Torch – an ultra-compact and lightweight torch accessory designed for use with the Oxyset Mobile Brazing System. The Precision Torch produces a stable, perfectly controlled thin flame ideal for use in difficult to reach areas and where detailed work is required.

If you’re still trying to figure out whether you should get the Ambro Controls Precision Torch, this article will guide you through the key differences between the original Oxyset Pro Torch that comes supplied with the Oxyset – and what it’s like to use the torches hands-on.

Which Torches are compatible with my Oxyset?

The Ambro Controls Oxyset Pro Torch and Precision Torch are specifically designed for use with the Ambro Controls Oxyset.

The Pro Torch is supplied with the Oxyset, whilst the Precision Torch is sold seperately.

4 Key Differences between the Pro and Precision Torch

#1 Flame Size and Application

The Ambro Controls Precision Torch offers a stable, thin flame for precise and detailed copper and aluminium soldering and brazing. With its ultra-compact size, this torch is designed for use in tighter narrow spaces, where precision is needed.

HVAC Tech & Educator, Gary McCreadie has used the Ambro Controls Precision Torch for smaller applications like reach ins.

“The applications I would use the smaller torch tip in, would be in reach-ins, coolers and stuff like that where we don’t have a lot of space,” Gary said. “The last time I’ve used this one was on a R290 Prep coolers Table and I got in, no problems. I fixed a leak, close to the evaporator.”

The Oxyset Pro Torch on the other hand, can use more gas and therefore can produce a much larger and hotter flame. It is great for larger jobs including welding, brazing, silver soldering and heating.
The Oxyset Pro Torch is ideal for everyday HVAC work and brazing copper pipes up to 1.5” in diameter, whilst the Precision Torch is suggested for use on lines up to 5/8″ in diameter.

#2 Handle and Hose Design

The Oxyset and Precision Torch both offer a comfortable and easy-to-use, lightweight handle suitable for one-handed use. Each torch comes with built-in oxygen and fuel gas controls that allows for quick adjusting and a 6.5ft flexible twin hose.

Whilst the Oxyset Pro Torch is approximately 12.5” in length from tip to handle, the Precision Torch is just 7.6” in length making it an ultra-compact and lightweight solution. The Precision Torch hose is slightly more thin, with a  3/32” inner hose diameter.

Both hoses offer the same connections and can be connected directly to the Ambro Controls Oxyset.

#3 Gas Usage and Pressure

The Oxyset and Precision Torch use MAP-Pro and Oxygen gas. As the Precision torch produces a smaller, more precise flame – it requires less oxygen and gas to operate.

The Precision Torch requires a minimum oxygen pressure of 29 PSI, roughly ½ the pressure required to operate when compared to the Oxyset welding torch  (see table below).

Fuel Gas Pressure Required Minimum 7 PSI
(never exceed 14 PSI)
Minimum 4.5 PSI

#4 Nozzles (Tips) Included

Both the Oxyset Pro Torch and Precision Torch come with interchangeable tips. The Ambro Controls Precision Torch is supplied with 3 tips – whilst the Oxyset kit comes with 2 larger torch tips.

Each tip is sized differently, affecting gas usage and flame size – offering extra options to suit the user’s application.
